Screenprinted Length, 2021

This project explored decolonisation through challenging western patriarchal expectations of women and celebrating the work and skill which goes into textile production, an area which has traditionally been dominated by women. The project aimed to encourage a re-examination of how women and their work are perceived within a western patriarchal society and recognise that change needs to continue being enacted to redress the inequalities women still face in current society.

I used pastels to draw the marks on paper before using these marks to digitally create repeats on photoshop, separating the colours onto different layers. These were then transferred onto two silk screens by exposing the pattern with light sensitive emulsion in a dark room. I then began several rounds of print and colour tests before mixing and colour matching the print paste and screenprinting a seven metre length on a cotton linen blend.
