Te Taio

Embroidery, 2022

This project was aimed at invasive plant species within Aotearoa that out-compete and displace endemic flora and fauna, reducing biodiversity within our unique ecosystem. I began my design process by documenting weed species that are common in Aotearoa, such as gorse, dock and climbing groundsel. I drew with coloured pencils to capture their essence and then translated these drawings into digital vectors suitable for Tajima embroidery software. The resulting designs reflect the way invasive plants camouflage in nature, unnoticed by general observers, yet causing irreparable damage to our endemic ecosystem.

Due to Covid restrictions we were unable to embroider the final designs.
